It’s no secret that a lot of us have been feeling pretty cooped up lately. Sheltering in place is certainly the responsible thing to do. But once we’ve reached the end of our streaming queues, finished our summer reading lists, and watered the plants…THEN what?

Until the air clears, the city and surrounding areas are putting on a wide range of fun online events you can participate in from your phone, tablet, or laptop. So instead of climbing the walls, check out some of the fun things you can do in San Diego — virtually. 

Couples’ Cooking Date Night — Saturday, September 12 

Celebrity chef and author Keshaun Winston has made food his passion over many years of an impressive culinary career.  Now he wants to teach you and your partner how to make a delectable dinner for yourselves. You’ll be working step-by-step with Chef Keshaun to prepare an appetizer and entrée for the two of you to share. So grab your tickets for this event, put on your apron, and get cooking! 

San Diego Blues Festival Goes Virtual — Saturday, September 12

The San Diego Blues Festival has drawn fans of this most vital of American art forms from all over the country every year since 2011. And they’re not about to let a little virus get them down! So the festival is taking its show online. This year’s lineup includes Tommy Castro & the Painkillers, Mr. Sipp, Southern Avenue, Watermelon Slim, and Whitney Shay. For more information, click here

Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon — Sunday, September 13

It’s not just the humans who surf around here. San Diego’s surf scene also makes room for our four-legged friends! Helen Woodward Animal Center‘s annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon is back for 2020 — albeit, with a virtual twist. Spectators and contestants won’t be gathering in person, but the surf is still up. Participants are encouraged to register online, and then submit video of their buddy’s best run. Submitted videos will be posted to the event gallery, and spectators can vote for their favorite curl-carving canine. Best of all, it’s for a good cause — proceeds go toward helping the pets and programs at the center.

Warwick’s Author Event: Edith Iger — Tuesday, September 15

The venerable Warwick’s is the county’s oldest family-owned bookstore, delighting San Diego’s literature lovers since 1896. This event brings “The Choice” author and noted psychologist Edith Iger into your living room. She’ll be discussing her latest work, “The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life.” A copy of her book will be included with the event and shipped directly to you. 

The Premise (Quarantine Edition) Virtual Comedy Show — Multiple Dates

These are trying times, and we could all use a good chuckle. That’s why local jokesters Jeff Dean, James Mwaura, and Andrew Orolfo conceived The Premise: an event where they bring together the nation’s best comics to deliver the goods — digitally. Daughtry: Live From Home (Music Box Benefit) — Tuesday, September 22 

Join “American Idol” and “Masked Singer” superstar Chris Daughtry as he performs an acoustic live streaming concert exclusively for San Diegans, all to benefit our hometown venue Music Box. Tickets for the live stream, virtual meet-and-greet, and special merchandise packages are available now.

Balboa Park is the jewel of San Diego — it’s filled with world-class museums, gorgeous park space, and endless cultural experiences. And now, you can visit virtually!
