Your San Diego Summer Guide

There’s never a bad time to visit us here in “America’s Finest City,” but it’s impossible to go wrong in the summer. San Diego’s beautiful beaches, exceptional weather and endless numbers of irresistible attractions just always seem to be at their best during the warmest months of the year. Heading into town, and looking for great things to do? You’ve come to the right place in more ways than one. Here’s your guide to having a great San Diego summer

What to Pack

When visiting San Diego, it’s usually a good idea to pack for spring or summer temperatures any time of year. Linen shirts, shorts, sundresses, sandals, sunglasses and breathable hats are a good idea. Also, pack comfortable shoes (there’s a lot of walking to be done if you’re visiting local attractions), as well as sunscreen and flip-flops for the beach. It’s a good idea to bring a book, or tablet/e-reader for reading by the pool, too.

Visit Balboa Park (9.2 miles away)

Balboa Park is a San Diego must-see. At a massive 842 acres, it’s one of the largest urban park spaces in the country — making it an even bigger green space than New York’s Central Park. In addition to being an absolutely beautiful natural spot, the park is also home to some of San Diego’s most acclaimed museums, restaurants, and public art. So it’s the ideal place to have a leisurely stroll and appreciate the fresh air while you’re here.

Stop By the San Diego Zoo

While at Balboa Park, make a day of it by visiting The San Diego Zoo — nothing short of one of the finest zoos in the country. It’s home to more than 3,700 animals of more than 650 different species — including many threatened and endangered. The zoo draws more than 3.2 million visitors every year. Don’t miss your chance to spend a leisurely day strolling around the stunningly landscaped grounds, visiting your favorite animal friends, and taking in the weather.

Have Some Fun On the Water

You can spend a whole day getting adventurous on the water here on Mission Bay. Our very own on-site Adventure Watersports can help with kayak rentals, stand-up wave runners, water bikes, pontoon boats and more. There’s also world-class surfing at Mission Beach less than a mile down the road.

Take in Some Live Music

San Diego is home to some of the country’s most celebrated music venues and festivals, and the summer events calendar is bursting with options. Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay offers a full schedule of world-renowned national touring performers at an open-air amphitheater overlooking the adjacent marina. The KAABOO Festival at Petco Park will keep you dancing all night. The locals’ favorite Adams Avenue Street Fair hosts more than 100 musical acts across seven stages. We even host live music right here at Firefly Eatery & Bar. You’ll find stellar sounds just about everywhere!

See the San Diego County Fair

San Diego County Fair returns to the Del Mar Fairgrounds from June 8-July 4 after taking a break in 2021. Visitors can look forward to all of the food, agricultural displays, rides, entertainment, animal exhibits, vendors, and more that they’ve come to love from the region’s biggest and best county fair. So bring your sense of adventure, pack some sunscreen, and get ready to have a fantastic time at the fair once again.

Drop By San Diego Brew Fest

With more than 150 breweries in and around the metro, San Diego has swiftly become one of the country’s premier craft beer capitals. Micro, small-batch and craft brew fans can sample some of the city’s best beers at San Diego Brew Fest, as well as a deep selection of other regional brews and even international varieties. Live music, some of the city’s most popular food trucks and plenty of surprises will also keep things lively. Brew Fest happens on Saturday, June 11 from noon – 4:00 pm.

San Diego’s beautiful expanses of shoreline stretch on for miles. And thanks to the city’s famous inland bays, we have even more beachfront than it might appear at first glance — so you’re never far from a relaxing day at the water. Not sure where to start?
